TLDR

Thornmail Thresh Runes

Optional Summoner Spells
Exhaust
Defensive option. Exhaust for peeling against enemy divers and assassins and protecting your carries.
Ghost
Ghost for extra mobility - great for chasing down fleeing enemies or staying on top of slippery AD carries.
Ignite
Offensive option if you are feeling spicy. Grievous Wounds + some damage. Good in early fights and you can score some kills, but reduces your going-in potential. Especially later.
Optional Runes
Grasp of the Undying
Grasp of the Undying is a solid alternative. You become more tanky over time as your HP grows, you get some sustain and you get some damage as well.
Presence of Mind
Triumph is better overall (heal + gold), but if you want to have easier time with your mana, go Presence of Mind.
Demolish
If you are into taking objectives, you can consider taking Demolish rune. Usually it is worth it and lets you push turrets quicker. Utility slash team oriented option.
How it works
- You rush Thornmail and stack as much Armor as you can.
- You become auto-attackers' worst nightmare.
- Hit or miss. Works great if the enemy team is full of physical damage and auto-attackers. Less effective against full AP - but still viable since players auto attack anyway.
Playstyle
Rush Thornmail to punish all enemies who auto attack you.
Stay in fights - the more they hit you, the more they hurt themselves.
Adapt: if they are heavy AP, pivot to regular tank items.
How to play
Thornmail Thresh
- You get extra spikey with stacks of Damnation (Passive), thanks to additional Armor.
Getting started
- Start with Bramble Vest and Ruby Crystal. Rush Thornmail #1, then keep stacking Armor items.
- This build is aimed to counter AD comps. Since you don't know the enemy team before loading in, you need to adapt. If they are heavy AP, you can just fall back to a regular tank build.
During fights
- Stay in the middle of fights as long as possible. The more enemies hit you, the more damage Thornmail reflects.
- If you manage to proc Aftershock during the fight, you are gonna deal tons of damage from Thornmail, try keeping it for it, if you can.
- Randuin's Omen is great for engagements - it slows enemies on activation and reduces their crit damage.
- Late game, you can consider selling boots for a 6th item - for even more sweet Thornmail damage!
- You can use Bandlepipes to give your whole team an attack speed boost whenever you CC enemies. Great synergy with auto attackers.
Runes
- Be careful to not waste Aftershock. Try timing it and keeping it for going in. It increases your Armor greatly, which in turn increases Thornmail damage!
- You can also take Grasp of the Undying as an alternative rune if you prefer scaling.
- Triumph is better overall (heal + gold), but if you want to have easier time with your mana, go Presence of Mind.
Tips and Tricks
Champion
General
- Flash + Flay (E) is often better than Flash + Death Sentence (Q) - E first then land guaranteed Q as they try running away while slowed.
- You are a CC machine and it is important that you coordinate CC with your team. Hook after ally CC for guaranteed hit, or save hook to extend their CC duration.
- If you are playing against any Spell Shields, try getting rid of them before engaging. Either wait them out or fake your abilities, so they wasite it.
Damnation (Passive)
- Remember to pay attention and collect souls to permanently increase your Armor, AP, Dark Passage (W) shields and Flay (E) damage. Do it especially after fights.
Death Sentence (Q)
- Remember that if you reactivate your Death Sentence (Q), you commit to it, good or bad. Make sure it is worth it and it is not one way ticket.
- Sometimes it is better to let your team collapse on the target or just leave it be - for poke and zoning.
- You don't always want to reactivate Q immediately. If you wait for full duration, you will drag enemy a little bit closer. As well as you can chain it with Flay (E) for longer CC.
- You can use Death Sentence (Q) to escape. Just Q to a minion or enemy champion that is far away.
- Hook through dying minions - time your Q to pass through a minion as it dies to surprise enemies hiding behind wave.
Dark Passage (W)
- You can fake lantern to help your allies or to play mind games. Throw Dark Passage (W) back without anyone to make enemies retreat thinking backup arrived
- Flash while ally clicks Dark Passage (W) to pull them to your new location for extended range escapes, engages or some cool plays.
- You can use Dark Passage (W) for scouting bushes.
- Use lantern on souls to collect them safely from distance without face checking.
Flay (E)
- Flay (E) cancels dashes and channels - keep it and time it to interrupt enemy jumps, channels etc.
- Flay (E) backwards first to slow enemy, then follow with Q for near-guaranteed hook on slowed target.
- Flay mid-air during Death Sentence (Q) dash - cast Flay (E) while flying to your hooked target for instant additional CC.
The Box (R)
- The Box (R) is very versatile ability. You can use it both offensively and defensively.
- You can use The Box (R) for disengage and stopping enemy team engages.
- You can use The Box (R) for peeling from your allies. Enemy assassins going after your carries? Put The Box (R) down and watch them go around or thorough it, getting slowed in the process.
- Offensively, The Box (R) can be used to trap enemies, cut off their escape, or initiate fights alongside your team.
Thresh Combos
- Hook Flash Lantern combo - Death Sentence (Q) enemy, Flash toward tower/team, then Dark Passage (W) your ally in for extended engage range.
Riot
- Communication is key when making use of Thresh's lantern. Let your teammates know how you like to use it.
- Death Sentence and Flay can be combined in either cast order for powerful combinations.
- Thresh can collect souls without needing to kill units himself. Planning your map position to be near the most deaths will help to maximize soul collection.
